Caspian Sea oil rigs, old and new. Oil rigs are used to drill for and pump oil from below the Earth's surface. Oil is the fossil fuel that powers much of the world's cars and industries, and which is also used to produce materials like plastics. Several "nodding donkey" oil pump designs are seen here. The Caspian Sea is an oil- rich region. Photographed in July 2004, on the Caspian Sea coast near Baku, Azerbaijan.
