Diving bell housed on a diving ship showing the emergency breathing gas strapped onto outside (cylinders) of the bell. A thick, many coloured, dirty cord known as the umbilical (left top) supplies the gas, water, electricity and communication from the ship to the bell. This cord does not carry weight: this is done by another thinner wire which is not visible. The bell is about to be locked into place over the living chambers for divers in pressurised condition (red base). The living chambers are at the same pressure as the diving bell and can be gradually adjusted to surface pressure.
