Biodiesel derived from waste vegetable oil. Dr Tarik al-Shemmeri holds a beaker of the fuel oil he created by esterification of waste cooking oil. The process uses alcohol and gentle heating to create a fuel that can be used in place of petroleum diesel. Due to the odour it produces when burnt, this fuel is likely to be used to power small generators in rural communities. It is cleaner than conventional fossil fuels, in particular it produces less sulphur dioxide, the chemical responsible for acid rain. Recycling of waste oil avoids pollution of land and water by its disposal. Photographed at the University of Staffordshire, England.
