Wheat straw by-product. Researcher Fabien Deswarte from the University of York, UK, holds two jars. The right jar contains waste wheat straw chippings. The left jar contains industrially valuable wax extracted from waste wheat straw. The wax was extracted using a process known as supercritical extraction. This technique enables useful chemical compounds to be extracted from plant matter without the use of environmentally harmful solvents. Deswarte is a member of the Green Chemistry Group at York University. This group researches industrial processes that use renewable resources and processes that involve less environmental waste or damage. Photographed in 2006.
