Caption

EDITORIAL USE ONLY. Biofuel research. Researchers preparing to harvest a giant reed plant (Arundo donax). This plant is being investigated as a source of ethanol for use as a biofuel. Ethanol is produced from plant residues by fermentation, and is used in motor vehicles as an alternative to fuel obtained from oil deposits. Large mats of these plants would be grown on lagoons of waste water, thus avoiding deforestation or using land needed for food crops. Photographed in the USA.
