This system, a plasmid-based functional proteomic work cell, is designed to find the proteins in the yeast cells that are needed for maximum fermentation. This information can then be used to engineer improved yeast strains to ferment plant material to produce ethanol. Ethanol is used in motor vehicles as an alternative to fuel obtained from oil deposits. If obtained from renewable sources with minimal environmental impact, biofuels can cause less damage than oil products. Photographed in the USA.
