Hydroelectric power dam. View of a snow covered hydroelectric power dam known as the James Bay Project. The dam gates (centre) allow a controlled amount of water through to drive electricity turbines. The lake (centre left) is frozen so the water flows through the gates from beneath the ice. Hydroelectric power has little environmental impact other than on the river that it is built on. Hydroelectric power is often used at peak times because the gates can be opened at a moments notice. Photographed in Quebec, Canada.
