Hydroelectric dam. Water being released at the base of a hydroelectric dam. This is the Bonneville Dam on the Columbia River in Oregon, USA. The dam has 18 gates at its base through which water is released downstream of the dam after turning electricity-generating turbines. In 2004, the two powerhouses located at the Bonneville Dam produced 5 billion kilowatt hours of energy each year to power 500,000 homes.
