Dniprohes (Dnieper hydroelectric station) under construction on the river Dnieper in Ukraine, USSR. The dam was constructed between 1927 and 1932. At almost a kilometre long and 60 metres high, it was considered one of Stalin's great achievements. In raising the level of the Dnieper by almost 40 metres it made the entire river navigable. The hydroelectric station provides power for the surrounding industrial centres. It was later destroyed during the Second World War, but rebuilt afterwards.
