Bureya hydroelectric dam. This dam (left) is being built on the Bureya River, a tributary of the Amur River, in the Amur region of Russia's Far East. Construction of the dam started nearly 30 years ago in the 1970s, but funding stopped in the 1990s. The project was revived in 1999 and the first two hydroelectric generators became operational in 2003. Electricity pylons are seen at right. The third generator was scheduled to begin operating in November 2004. The depth of the water reservoir behind the dam (left) had at this point reached 120 metres. The final depth will be 200 metres, and there will be a total of six generators providing electricity to the surrounding region and beyond. Photographed in October 2004.
