Hydroelectric power station turbine. Hydroelectric power stations use water, stored behind a dam on a river, to generate electricity. The water is allowed to flow from the dam to the river below, passing through turbines on the way. The kinetic energy of the falling water is converted by the turbines to electrical energy. This is the Zhigulyovsk hydroelectric power station in the Samara region of Russia. Photographed in 2007.
