Hydroelectric power station turbine room. The tip of the turbine, which extends downwards below this room, is the orange structure. Electricity is generated by the turbine as water flows through it from the reservoir formed behind the dam. This is the Chirkei hydroelectric power station, in the Republic of Dagestan, Russia. Construction was completed in 1976, and the dam is one of the largest in the world. The power station has four generators, each of which produces 275 megawatts of power. Photographed in 2005.
