Hydroelectric power station turbine room. The turbines extend downwards below this room. The circular white structures are the tops of the turbines. Electricity is generated as water flows through the turbines from the reservoir behind the dam. These turbines are part of the Sayano-Shushenskaya hydroelectric power station, in the Republic of Khakasia, in Siberian Russia. This is one of the largest hydroelectric power stations in the world. It was opened in 1978, and has ten turbines, each generating 640 megawatts of power. Photographed in 2007.
