Geothermal power plant. View of 'The Geysers' geothermal field, northern California, USA. The region has high geothermal activity, as there is an abundance of underground heat in the form of steam which can be exploited. The steam can be used for directly heating homes or buildings. It can also be used to drive electricity turbines. This is the largest geothermal field in the world. It has a generating capacity of approximately 1400 megawatts. The Geysers is one of two locations in the world where high temperature geothermal steam can be directly used to turn electricity turbines. The other location is Laderello in Italy.
