Geothermal power station. Svartsengi geothermal power station, Iceland, seen across the Blue Lagoon, an artificial bathing lake. The lagoon is filled with hot waste water from the power station, which seeps into the surrounding volcanic rocks. The power plant uses the Earth's natural heat to drive electricity-generating turbines. Iceland is on a constructive plate margin, where new land is created by erupted lava.
