This area is part of the volcanic Kamchatka Peninsula, in the Russian Far East. At such power stations, the energy from underground heat and water is being used to generate electricity. The first power station in the Mutnovsky geothermal field was completed in 1987, and over 60 wells had been drilled by 2001.
