Tidal mill. Traditional tidal mill on a river estuary at low tide. The mill worked by opening sluice gates (under the bridge at lower right) to allow water into the pond (at left) when the tide was rising. When the tide began to fall, the sluice gates were closed, keeping a reservoir of water whose release could be controlled to power the mill. Photographed on the River Rance in France. This tidal mill was one of several in the area and it was the last to close. The River Rance is now bridged downstream of this mill by a barrage which generates electricity.
