Power from the wind. View of wind turbines in an electricity generating 'wind farm'. One of the leading forms of 'alternative' energy, wind power creates no emissions to threaten the environment. Wind power is, however, subject to the vagaries of the weather, so is best viewed as a means of reducing dependence on fossil fuel or nuclear power generation, rather than a direct replacement. Wind power is fairly capital- intensive, but has relatively low running costs. The main environmental problem is that of noise, both from the rotating blades and the 'whine' from the generators. Photographed in Hawaii.
