Traditional windmill. Close-up of a traditional windmill lit up at night. Windmills were traditio- nally used for performing heavy work such as pumping water to drain land or grinding cereal grain to make flour. The large sails, which were rotated by the force of the wind, drove the rotation of the machinery inside through a series of cogs. One of the skills of the miller was the adjustment of the blades so that the mill ran at a fairly constant rate. Photographed in Doel, Belgium.
