Windmill. This windmill dates from Norman times (11th century). Windmills were traditionally used for performing heavy work such as pumping water to drain land or grinding cereal grain to make flour. The large sails, which are rotated by the force of the wind, drive the rotation of the machinery inside through a series of cogs. One of the skills of the miller was the adjustment of the blades so that the mill ran at a fairly constant rate.
