They are made from thin films of amorphous (non-crystalline) silicon deposited on a glass titanium oxide substrate, and produce more power per unit cost than other types of silicon arrays. The Davis site contains 9600 photovoltaic modules in its arrays, and can generate up to 479 kilowatts of electricity - enough for 125 average homes. Although designed as a test facility, the array is so successful that it has been connected to a commercial electricity distribution grid.
