Solar water heater on the roof of a building. It comprises a rectangular flat plate collector and a cylindrical water storage tank. Inside the collector are a series of small tubes that pass over a black absorber plate. This absorbs sunlight and warms the water passing through the tubes. The hot water rises to the storage tanks by convection as it is heated and cooler water sinks down into the collector. This system is known as a thermosiphon solar water heater. This system harnesses the renewable energy of the sun, is relatively cheap to install and maintain and produces no waste products.
