Solar-powered sea canoe. The canoe is powered by stored electricity generated from the solar panels (black, rectangular), mounted on the front of the canoe. An outrigger at left stabilises the canoe as it moves across the sea. Solar panels are collections of photovoltaic cells, which use a light-absorbing material to generate electricity from sunlight. The material most commonly used is silicon. Solar power is a clean form of energy compared to petrol engines, as solar panels do not produce pollutant gases.
