Solar-powered parking meter. This parking meter is powered by stored electricity generated from the solar panel (black, rectangular), mounted on top of the meter. This solar panel can generate 20 watts of power. Solar panels are collections of photovoltaic cells, which use a light-absorbing material to generate electricity from sunlight. The material most commonly used is silicon. Electricity from solar power is a clean form of energy compared to electricity distributed from coal-fired power stations, as solar panels do not produce pollutant gases. Photographed in Grenoble, France.
