Solar-powered motorway telephone. Emergency motorway telephone, powered by stored electricity generated by the solar panel (blue, rectangular), mounted on top of the telephone. An antenna is on top of the solar panel. Solar panels are collections of photovoltaic cells, which use a light-absorbing material to generate electricity from sunlight. The material most commonly used is silicon. Electricity from solar power is a clean form of energy compared to electricity distributed from coal-fired power stations, as solar panels do not produce pollutant gases. Photographed in France.
