Solar panel for a motorway telephone. The solar panel (blue, rectangular), is mounted on top of the telephone (not seen), and is generating electricity to power the telephone. An antenna (partly seen) is on top of the solar panel. Solar panels are collections of photovoltaic cells, which use a light-absorbing material to generate electricity from sunlight. The material most commonly used is silicon. Electricity from solar power is a clean form of energy compared to electricity distributed from coal-fired power stations, as solar panels do not produce pollutant gases. Photographed in France.
