Chunks of silicon. This silicon will be used in the manufacture of photovoltaic cells for use in solar panels. These unrefined chunks of silicon can be handled in a variety of ways to produce processed varieties such as polycrystalline silicon, monocrystalline silicon, or ribbon silicon. Silicon is used in photovoltaic cells because, as a semiconductor material, it has space in its electronic structure to absorb the energy of incoming sunlight and convert it into an electrical current. Photographed at the Photowatt factory in Caen, France.
