Los Alamos laboratory during World War 2. View of the commissary store at the Los Alamos laboratory in New Mexico, USA, during the Manhattan Project. The Manhattan Project was the successful US effort in 1942-45 to build the first nuclear weapons. The commissary was a general grocery store, where scientists, workers and their families could make their food purchases. During the Manhattan Project, residents at the laboratory were able to purchase food at cost price plus 10 percent.
