Los Alamos laboratory during World War 2. Photograph of N Building, one of the buildings used by researchers in the Manhattan Project, the design and building of the first atomic bombs at Los Alamos, New Mexico in 1943-45. Most of the buildings were clustered together in the 'Technical Area'. The N Building, however, was at some distance from the main site and was built against the wall of one of the many finger canyons of Los Alamos. The security of the site is evident even here; note the large floodlights and barbed wire.
