Nuclear test preparation. Aerial view of prepara- tions for an underground atomic bomb test in Nevada, USA. A rack containing detectors which will be placed underground has been assembled in the tower at right. Many kilometres of cable carry data from these detectors to instrumentation in the trailers at left. Saucer-shaped craters caused by subsidence after previous underground nuclear explosions lie around the test site. The craters vary is depth and diameter, depending upon the weapon's size and burial depth, as well as the geology of the area immediately around it.
