Caption

Chemical hazard warning sign. The sign is warning walkers against entering this area due to chemical spraying being carried out. The chemical being used here is glyphosate herbicide (first sold as Roundup herbicide by Monsanto). This inhibits an enzyme that most plants need in order to grow. It is being used to suppress weed growth, allowing tree seedlings to use the soil nutrients instead. Wooden poles support newly planted trees on the hillside (background). The spraying is taking place in Kielder Forest, Northumberland, England's largest forest.
