Radon monitor. Person holding a radon monitor with a leaflet detailing the hazard of radon in the home. Radon is a radioactive gas that emanates from rock formations as the uranium they contain decays. Radon issues from the ground continuously since uranium is present in almost all rocks and soils. Radon dissipates quickly in the open air, but when trapped inside a building, the gas can accumulate in concentrations hundreds of times higher than out of doors. The radioactive decay products of radon have been shown to contribute to lung cancer.
