Radiation death. Composite image of a skull and an internationally-recognised radiation hazard sign. The skull represents the fatal consequences of exposure to dangerous radiations. A high dose of such radiation causes death within hours, due to destruction of the central nervous system. Low doses can also be fatal, causing symptoms of radiation sickness, such as nausea, diarrhoea, internal bleeding, loss of hair and loss of bone marrow. The sign usually warns of radioactive materials, such as uranium and plutonium, which emit highly energetic radiations, such as gamma rays, alpha particles and beta particles.
