Radiation hazards. Nuclear power plant surrounded by a radiation hazard warning symbol and people wearing radiation protection suits. Nuclear power plants use radioactive fuel (such as uranium and plutonium) and produce radioactive waste. Intense radiation can kill, and prolonged exposure at low levels can cause cancer and other disorders. The hazard symbol warns people to take the appropriate precautions. If an accident or terrorism results in radioactive contamination, these suits have to be worn to protect decontamination workers. Their suits and their masks, which supply clean air, will prevent contamination by radioactive dust.
