Radon gas sampling equipment. Hand-operated suction pump being used to obtain a gas sample for radon testing. The gas sample will be stored in the plastic bag inside the container (bottom centre). Radon, a radioactive gas produced by the decay of radium from uranium ores, forms part of the natural background radiation level, but in some places high concentrations can be harmful. Tests like this can be carried out to determine whether the level is harmful or not. This work is being carried out by the UK's Health Protection Agency.
