Core of a nuclear reactor. View of a nuclear reactor during the 'charging' period, during which the first load of fuel is placed in the core. The core is seen here below many metres of water. At the top of the frame is part of the crane used to carry the fuel elements and control rods from a storage area to the core. At the end of the charging period, the core is sealed with a dome. This dome also contains the machinery used to move the control rods to regulate the temperature of the core. The reactor seen here is at Flamanville, a 1300 megawatt pressurised water reactor in France.
