Cooling tower. View of steam rising from the cooling tower of a nuclear power station at dusk. A cooling tower is a device for cooling water by evaporation in the ambient air. A tower requires a flow of air and this may be induced by natural or mechanical means. Large cooling towers at power stations eliminate the problems of thermal pollution in masses of water. Water, taken from rivers or streams, is used several times for cooling purposes and finally dissipated as steam. Photographed in Canada.
