Chernobyl nuclear power plant worker using an intercom system in the control room for the number 1 reactor, on 30 November 2006. The Chernobyl nuclear power plant is near the city of Chernobyl, in the Ukraine. In 1986, it was the scene of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, which contaminated large areas of Europe with radioactive fallout, and required the surrounding area to be evacuated. Although that disaster involved the destruction of one of the reactors, the other three remained operational until 2000. Workers at the site now monitor the nuclear fuel, and carry out the lengthy decommissioning process. The initial stages of this process are expected to be completed by 2020.
