Chernobyl. Sarcophagus (at centre) containing the remains of the reactor core at Chernobyl nuclear power station, Ukraine (formerly in the USSR). The concrete sarcophagus was built to seal in the core and prevent further release of contamination. Since completion there have been doubts about the sarcophagus' structural integrity. The accident occurred on 25th April 1986 during an experiment with the No.4 RBMK-type reactor. The core overheated and caused a steam explosion which breached its containment building. Over a billion billion becquerels of radioactive nuclides were released into the atmosphere, contaminating much of northern Europe. Photographed in November 1986.
