Chernobyl. Night view of the sarcophagus (at centre) containing the remains of the reactor core at Chernobyl nuclear power station, Ukraine (formerly in the USSR). The concrete sarcophagus was built to prevent further release of contam- ination. Since its completion there have been doubts about the sarcophagus' integrity. The accident occurred on 25th April 1986 during an experiment with the No.4 RBMK-type reactor. The core overheated and caused a steam explosion which breached its containment building. Over a billion billion becquerels of radioactive nuclides were released into the atmosphere, contaminating much of northern Europe. Photographed in November 1986.
