Chernobyl. Construction of the sarcophagus containing the remains of the reactor core at Chernobyl nuclear power station, Ukraine (formerly in the USSR). In the foreground is a concrete mixing truck and construction workers. They are wearing cotton masks over their mouths to prevent inhalation of radioactive particles; some are also wearing gloves. The sarcophagus was built to prevent further release of contamination. Since its completion there have been doubts about the sarcophagus' integrity. The accident occurred on 25th April 1986 at the No.4 RBMK-type reactor. Over a billion billion becquerels of radioactive nuclides were released.
