Radiation deformed pig. Piglet born deformed due to the effect of radioactive fallout from the disaster at the Chernobyl nuclear power station in the Ukraine. The piglet has a large, swollen eye. Even low doses of radiation can cause mutations in living organisms. Fallout from the Chernobyl disaster contaminated much of northern Europe. The disaster occurred on 25th April 1986 after an experiment on Reactor 4 went wrong. Over a billion billion becquerels of radioactive nuclides were released. Photographed on the Petrovski collective farm, 65 km from Chernobyl, in 1987. The farm's croplands had a contamination of 150 billion becquerels per square kilometre.
