World's most radioactive area. Infrared satellite image of the area around the Mayak (Chelyabinsk-40 nuclear plant (top centre), Russia, that is highly contaminated with radioactivity. North is at top. Urban areas are light blue, lakes and rivers are black, bare fields are grey, green vegetation is bright red, & forests are brown. The town of Kyshtym is at upper left. The polluted River Techa flows from the Kyzyltash lake east of Mayak. Since 1948 Mayak has dumped or leaked more than 100 times the radiation released during the 1986 Cher- nobyl accident.
