Nuclear fuel production at the Novosibirsk Chemical Concentrate Works, Russia. This is an intermediate control stage, where the highly radioactive material is being handled behind lead shielding. The nuclear fuel pellets (such as the one being handled here) will be loaded into fuel rods. These will be used in a nuclear reactor to create a controlled nuclear reaction and generate electricity. Nuclear fuels use radioactive isotopes of uranium and/or plutonium. In this case, the material being used is uranium dioxide. Novosibirsk is in southern Siberia, near Russia's border with Central Asia. Photographed on 17 August 2006.
