Nuclear fuel assembly at the Novosibirsk Chemical Concentrate Works, Russia. This is the pin loading area where the uranium fuel pellets are loaded inside the metal pins (or rods) seen here. The fuel rods are then bundled together and used in a nuclear reactor, where a controlled nuclear chain reaction drives the generation of electricity. Nuclear fuels use radioactive isotopes of uranium and/or plutonium. Novosibirsk is in southern Siberia, near Russia's border with Central Asia. Photographed on 17 August 2006.
