Nuclear fuel assembly. Masked and gloved worker using forceps to handle pellets of uranium dioxide at a nuclear fuel assembly factory. Forceps are used to reduce the amount of exposure to the radioactive element uranium. The fuel pellets will be loaded into fuel pins (hollow metal tubes, not seen) and used to initiate and maintain a controlled nuclear fission reaction. Millions of these pellets will be used in a typical nuclear power station. These nuclear fuel pellets are being handled at the Novosibirsk Chemical Concentrate Plant, which is in Novosibirsk, Russia. Photographed in 2007.
