Nuclear fuel assembly. Worker inspecting the quality of the fuel pins being used at a nuclear fuel assembly factory. These fuel pins, each several metres long, are hollow metal tubes that will be filled with small pellets of nuclear fuel. This fuel will be a radioactive isotope such as uranium or plutonium. Hundreds of these fuel pins will be gathered together to form a fuel pin bundle, and several hunderd of these will be loaded into a nuclear reactor to initiate a controlled nuclear fission reaction. This inspection is taking place at the Novosibirsk Chemical Concentrate Plant, which is in Novosibirsk, Russia. Photographed in 2007.
