Aerial view of the Yucca Mountain site, the location of a proposed high-level nuclear waste repository. The site is on the boundary of the Nevada Test Site (NTS), the area where underground nuclear tests are conducted in the USA. The geology of the region is being studied to determine its suitability to house high-level nuclear waste in deep underground storage facilities. The properties of the local volcanic rock (tuff) and the deep water table seem to make this site ideal, ensuring that the waste is not released to the environment over the tens of thousands of years it needs to stay at the NTS.
