Radioactive pollution. Radiation warning signs near an area of uranium waste at the uranium mill of the Dawn Mining Company in Ford, Washington, USA. The Dawn Mill processed uranium from the open pit Midnite Mine which operated from 1955 to 1981. Since then, the mine owner's reluctance to pay for the clean up of radioactive contamination and ongoing leaks has resulted in the area being designated a "Superfund" site by the US Environmental Protection Agency, thus enabling public money to be used to pay the clean up costs.
