High-level nuclear waste. Workers in a storage hall at a nuclear fuel reprocessing centre. Radioactive and long-term nuclear waste, produced during nuclear fission reactions, is stored here after being separated out from used nuclear fuel. The waste is vitrified (encased in molten glass). It is being stored here until a suitable long-term storage area, probably deep underground, has been prepared. Long-term nuclear waste will remain dangerously radioactive for hundreds of years. This is the La Hague reprocessing centre in northern France. Photographed in 2004.
